What opportunities are there for an instructional designer in higher education?

Like other educational disciplines instructional designers have can pursue opportunities as professors, lecturers, researchers and consultants.

In addition to being a lecture you may be able to find occupations that work for institutions of higher education.  For example, the University of Washington (UW) has a Center for Instructional Development and Research (CIDR).  This center provides consultation and assistance to university professors and faculty.  Learn more about the UW Center for Instrucigtonal Development and Research by clicking HERE.

In other universities these services might be provided by the instructional design and development professors.

There are a variety of resources available to locate job opportunities in higher education.

  • Professors and Education Departments - your first, and maybe best, contact may be with your education program.  Talk to university professors to determine what opportunities are available at your university.  Your professors also collaborate with other professionals and may have contacts that can provide assistance.  Most college professors are excited to help new instructional designers enter the field.
  • On-line Job Listings – finding job opportunities online is a fast and easy way to sift through thousands of employment opportunities.  While many of these web services cater to the corporate world, it is still relatively easy to find job opportunities for instructional designers within a few minutes of searching.
  • Government – state sponsored schools and government agencies that manage the educational system may also provide you the opportunity for a job.  Most university websites will have an employment section that will specify how apply for a job.  Some of these sites will even keep an up-to-date list of current openings.  If you search government job listings you may come across opening for a state or federal education position.  While you may not work directly for an institution of higher learning you may have a direct influence on important aspects of government funded and managed organizations.
