About the Author
Craig Locatis has worked as an educational research specialist in the Lister Hill National Center for Biomedical Communications of the National Library of Medicine at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland since 1979. He is currently with the Library’s Office of High Performance Computing and Communications where he manages external research projects and conducts internal research related to the use of advanced networks in healthcare. While at the Library, he has managed and conducted research and development on educational technology involving the Internet, hypermedia programs, videodisc, and authoring software and has managed its Collaboratory Program and related servers for web, database, streaming, and videoconferencing applications.
He has worked on information interfaces, online help, and documentation and has developed workshops to train health science faculty on aspects of educational technology. At one time he managed a joint project with the Army Research Institute to establish a database of authoring system software; managed a joint project with the Department of State to connect the national medical libraries of eight newly independent states of the former Soviet Union to the Internet and provide them with other assistance; and helped establish a demonstration center for new educational technology (The Learning Center for Interactive Technology) at NLM. His work at the Learning Center involved consultation with staff at the Library and health science professionals in the field regarding educational technology applications. When he first joined the Library, he participated in the establishment of a national network for training health science faculty in educational technology.
He has received numerous individual and group performance awards at the Library, including the NIH Award of Merit. He has held offices in the Association for Educational Communications and Technology (AECT) and the Health Science Communications Association (HeSCA) and has received the HeSCA Literary Award. He is a consulting editor for Educational Technology Research and Development and Computers in Human Behavior.
Prior to joining the National Library of Medicine, he taught at the Rutgers University School of Information and Communications Studies and the University of Minnesota College of Education. He worked at the Southwest Regional Laboratory for Educational Research and Development after completing his master’s degree. He has been a visiting or adjunct professor at Long Beach State University, Georgia State University, Catholic University, The George Washington University, Marymount University, and Vilnius University (in Lithuania) at various times in his career.
He received his Doctorate in Instructional Technology from Syracuse University in 1973 and his Masters in Educational Technology from Arizona State University in 1968. His Baccalaureate Degree, in History and Political Science at Arizona State University, was earned in 1967.
