What its Like...
Instructional Design Opportunities in Military Education and Training Environments deals with the importance of IDD in one are which involves a very low margin for mistakes and high expensive equipment to operate. Been a challenging environment, the need to have the knowledge of the theory in IDD is very important due to the complexity and nature of instruction.
This chapter provides an overview of the major issues and challenges for instru ctional designers and developers in international military communities, from classroom to combat environment. Also it gives an insight into the roles and responsibilities of the instructional designers and developers who create training products for the military. Besides the academic model of instructional design, in the military the instructional design must produce training that meets the requirements of the military as well as the needs of the individual. Today's servicemen and women volunteer to serve their country, but they expect something in return, therefore the designer need to know the military culture and the role of instructional design and development within that culture.
The main points and challenges of the IDD in the military environment are: recognizing that ineffective instruction can have catastrophic consequences; creating training that addresses the needs of the military while considering the interests of the individual; designing for an environment that is constantly changing; using technology wisely when technology is evolving more rapidly than the ability to accommodate change; assuming the responsibilities dictated by one's role and relationshi p to the military (federal worker or contractor); designing for individual projects, which may be repurposed into other training products or delivery environments.
Also this chapter shows that the emphasis on the professional needs of the individual as well the organization, budget limitations, and quickly-evolving technologies are all parts of the Instructional designers environmental challenge as well as rewarding. It is a great opportunity to grow professionally and the opportunity to work in every aspect of instructional design from analysis to evaluation. |
